Sonbar basenjis was established in 1970. We breed basenjis, exclusively. Sonbar Basenjis compete in conformation, obedience, lure trials and agility.
We have 100 homebred champions which include:
- 2 multiple Best in show winners
- 34 specialty winners, with several multiple specialty winners.
- 34 different Sonbar basenjis have been awarded group placements, (10 of them awarded Group 1).
Our mission is to produce excellent temperament, with health a big consideration in our breeding program. All of our breeding stock is health tested, including the NEW DNA test for Fanconi status. Click on the BCOA button and follow the links for information about the NEW DNA test.
Sonbar basenjis have many generations of eye exam results and hip xrays (OFA) results for you to examine.
We breed only AKC registered basenjis, most of them are also AKC champions. We breed our girls to AKC Champion males.

The below two pictures are of 5/6 of the Irish x Will litter. Taken when the pups were 8 weeks old.
08 is off to a great start, the first major of the year finished Penn. That entire litter of 6 are now AKC Champions. Check the Irish X Will link!
Our 100th AKC Champion is also from that Will x Irish litter. Brenda Cassell's stud fee puppy back, CH. Sonbar Signet P'Firy Pheonix finished with back to back 5 point wins, at the all breed shows after 07 nationals.

Not to be outdone by the conformation basenjis, little Sparkie, AKC Aljor's Back to Sonbar UDX2 Can CDX, has now complete the requirement for her UDX 2 award. She is the only basenji in breed history to earn a UDX 2. To get a "leg" to a UDX title, a dog has to qualify in both utility and open at the same show. Sparkie has now done this 20 times! Make that 22 times. Gary called 1/3/08 with news of the next 2 qualifiers. Go Sparkie, GO!

2008 will see a 1/2 sib breeding on Irish. Derby will be bred to Gracie, reds and tris anticipated.
Glitter will be bred to our puppy Sonic. Reds and tris expected from that litter, too.
Both breedings are Fanconi clear x clear.
Both these girls have produced specialty winners in previous litters.

This years puppies were at their first specialty in July. Sonbar's Table Talk (gabby) was best female puppy in sweepstakes. Her littermate, Sonbar's Tabloid talk (Gossip) was reserve winners bitch and best puppy in the regular classes. Thanks to Laura Caldwell for showing Gabby.
