I was in Egypt from Feb 5, 2004 until Feb 23, 2004. I was very fortunate to find a lot of basenji carvings in a tomb in Saqqara (AKA Sakkara). Most of them were found in the Tomb of Mere-Ruka. Because I saved them in high resolution, it takes a while for them to load.Scoll down to see them.
The next two are the same carving, on the top is a distant shot, on the bottom is a close up. This carving is above the doorway that is visible in the picture with Alex in it. The doorway is to the left of Alex.
The below two carvings were above door ways.
The basenis are in the lower right
in the carving at the right..
Above is the first carving I came to inside Mereruka's tomb, it's total size is aprox 2 feet tall x 3 1/2 feet long. It's two rows of basenjis hunting. Notice on the above left, there are 5 basenjis taking down a deer. On the bottom left is a basenji with something tied around his neck, taking down another deer, and bottom right another basenji with a downed deer.
This carving took up an entire wall, pictured is great nephew, Alex, he's 10, to give you an idea of the size of this wall. Below is a close up that I doctored so the basenji are more visible.
The next several pictures are all from the same room within the tomb.
These two are more difficult to see, but I felt they should be included, as they are basenjis, for sure!
This is the one of a basenji drinking from a bowl. This one was found in the tomb next to Mereruka's tomb.
The top one was not in a tomb. It was hung on a wall along one of the walkways. It's the first carving I saw at Saqqara. I was sure excited when I saw it!
This is not a carving, but a hieroglyphic found on a sarcophagus in the Cairo Museum. In hieroglyphics this symbol means dog.
It is about 2 inches long.
These two are
close ups from
the above
carving. They are
the natural color
of this carving.
I had to "doctor"
the large scene
for it to reproduce
well enough
to see the
basenjis.
These next two are hunting scenes, I had to "doctor" them get the basenjis to show.
